LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for removing fat and has been used for decades. It uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as from the abdomen, hips, thighs or buttocks.
If you’ve tried dieting and exercise, yet still can’t seem to shift that fat, liposuction could be the only option available to you. While you have liposuction at almost any age, you will obtain the best results if your skin still has enough elasticity to achieve a smooth contour following fat removal.
Am I a good candidate for Liposuction?
Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for liposuction surgery.
- Areas of fat deposits that do not go away with diet and exercise-so called ‘diet resistant fat’.
- People with good skin elasticity
- Men and women of normal weight who mainly want to improve their body shape and contours.
Procedure
Liposuction is performed in an outpatient surgery Centre or in a hospital. Liposuction requires anaesthesia. But the type of anaesthesia depends upon how much of the body is being worked on. For small areas, local anaesthesia is used. General anaesthesia may be used in a hospital setting when a large amount of fat is to be removed.
During the surgery, small tiny incisions (< 5mm), are made over the appropriate areas and the cannula is inserted. The cannula is connected to the suctioning apparatus. The cannula moves rapidly back and forth to loosen fat cells, when are suctioned out and placed into a flask.
After the surgery, the patient must wear compression garment, to help skin conform to the reduced body contours. The fat cells that are removed by liposuction do not grow back. After liposuction the body’s new shape is more or less permanent.
Recovery Time
Immediately after liposuction you may look bloated because of the liquids you received during the procedure. There may be swelling and some bruising at the areas of incision. These are temporary and can be relieved by medication.
For the first few weeks following the procedure, you will wear a compression garment. After a few weeks, you’ll be able to remove the garment at night and will just need to keep it on during the day.
Following the directions of your plastic surgeon is very important for optimum healing. Some people return to work after liposuction in just a few days, others might wait 1-2 weeks
